Neither of the main parties seems to have any idea how we are to meet the looming shortfall in power. As the election approaches, two issues should transcend all others. One, obviously, is what the parties propose to do about the £178 billion deficit in government spending. But another, equally terrifying – as this column has warned for years – is what is to be done to avert the fast-looming crisis in Britain’s electricity supplies. With 40 per cent of our generating capacity due to disappear in the next few years, as 14 of our major nuclear and coal-fired power stations are forced to close, how do the parties propose to keep Britain’s lights on and our computer-dependent economy functioning? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/christopherbooker/7386628/How-will-David-Cameron-keep-the-lights-on.html info@all-energy.co.uk (www.smartenergy.co.uk) Sun, 07 Mar 2010 07:14:20 GMT http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/christopherbooker/7386628/How-will-David-Cameron-keep-the-lights-on.html RE strategy: Miliband challenges Cameron Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband threw down the gauntlet to Conservative leader David Cameron, challenging him to clarify his party's position on key climate change policies. They work – just look at the German renewables industry ...... Thank goodness Jeremy Leggett stepped in to correct some of the inaccuracies in George Monbiot's piece. The errors, however, are even more extensive than Jeremy highlighted. It isn't often that Monbiot manages to get the politics, the details and the practicalities of an argument all wrong at the same time. He managed to do so, however, in his attack on the government's feed-in tariffs proposals for renewable energy. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cif-green/2010/mar/05/solar-panel-feed-in-tariff-benefits info@all-energy.co.uk (www.smartenergy.co.uk) Sun, 07 Mar 2010 07:11:42 GMT http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cif-green/2010/mar/05/solar-panel-feed-in-tariff-benefits FiT for purpose? The debate on the UK’s new Feed-In Tariff (FiT) has been quite lively, with the Guardian’s George Monbiot arguing that, with solar PV being still very expensive, the way the FiT provided the support needed was economically regressive. It does look that way at first glance - those that could afford to invest say £10,000 in PV might get £1000 p.a. back for the electricity they generated and used, paid for by all the other consumers, who would be charged extra via their electricity bills. It’s been suggested that this would lead to a £11p.a. surcharge on bills by 2020. However, in a rebuttal to Monbiot’s analysis, Jeremy Leggett from Solar Century said ‘the average household levy in 2013, when tariff rates are all up for review, is likely to be less than £3,’ and he added ‘this is far less than the average saving from the government’s various domestic energy efficiency measures over the same period. So there is no net subsidy. The levy is not “regressive” at all’. http://environmentalresearchweb.org/blog/2010/03/fit-for-purpose.html info@all-energy.co.uk (www.smartenergy.co.uk) Sun, 07 Mar 2010 07:11:00 GMT http://environmentalresearchweb.org/blog/2010/03/fit-for-purpose.html Toyota joins clean energy partnership Toyota and the Clean Energy Partnership announced today (5 March) that Toyota has become a new international auto partner for the organisation. The guidelines, published by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) today will help English regions set themselves ambitious renewable targets in their new Regional Strategies, in line with the UK's overall target for 15% renewable energy by 2020. The document provides regional authorities with guidance on how to calculate the potential their areas have for renewables. This might include what the wind speeds are in different areas, how many houses there are with roof space - and what constraints they should then apply. The guidance provides detail on how to assess potential for large and small scale onshore wind, biomass, hydro power and solar energy. http://www.decc.gov.uk/en/content/cms/news/pn10_040/pn10_040.aspx info@all-energy.co.uk (www.smartenergy.co.uk) Sat, 06 Mar 2010 07:35:52 GMT http://www.decc.gov.uk/en/content/cms/news/pn10_040/pn10_040.aspx UK schools to get A* for smarter energy Two British clean technology firms have combined forces to unveil a blueprint for the eco schools of the future. Also included in the Government’s plans is the roll-out of a £30m fund for a network of electric vehicle hubs – called Plugged-In Places – which will see charging infrastructure appearing in car parks, major supermarkets, leisure and retail centres, as well as on the street. The first Plugged-In Places were today named today as London, Milton Keynes and the North East; and between them they will be installing over 11,000 vehicle recharging points during the next three years. http://nds.coi.gov.uk/clientmicrosite/Content/Detail.aspx?ClientId=202&NewsAreaId=2&ReleaseID=411534&SubjectId=36 info@all-energy.co.uk (www.smartenergy.co.uk) Sat, 27 Feb 2010 08:02:03 GMT http://nds.coi.gov.uk/clientmicrosite/Content/Detail.aspx?ClientId=202&NewsAreaId=2&ReleaseID=411534&SubjectId=36 Lottery windfall for six RE projects Six Scottish renewables projects have been awarded a cumulative £2 million by the National Lottery good causes fund. In our solar module factory in Wales in Wrexham, we have expanded the production capacity of initially 20 to now 280MW." http://www.pv-tech.org/news/_a/sharp_predicts_a_bright_future_for_uk_solar_market/ info@all-energy.co.uk (www.smartenergy.co.uk) Sat, 27 Feb 2010 07:58:48 GMT http://www.pv-tech.org/news/_a/sharp_predicts_a_bright_future_for_uk_solar_market/ Councils to generate green power Local councils will be allowed to start generating and selling electricity back to the grid, in legislation being planned to bring about a "local energy revolution". Ed Miliband, the climate change secretary, intends to help councils to become energy providers, individually or jointly, by setting up renewable energy companies. The plan is the latest attempt to shake up the energy provision and encourage sustainable sources. Councils are responsible for some 10% of UK carbon emissions and Miliband thinks they need incentives to move to lower carbon energy. http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/feb/25/energy-emissions-renewables-councils-generation info@all-energy.co.uk (www.smartenergy.co.uk) Fri, 26 Feb 2010 08:49:38 GMT http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/feb/25/energy-emissions-renewables-councils-generation Approval recommended for pyrolysis plant The hotly-disputed waste-to-energy pyrolysis plant at Carnbroe has been recommended for approval by planning officials. Councillors on North Lanarkshire’s planning committee must now decide whether to rubber-stamp the application or take the more unusual step of voting against the expert assessment. http://www.acadvertiser.co.uk/lanarkshire-news/local-news/monklands-news/2010/02/24/approval-recommended-for-controversial-carnbroe-pyrolysis-plant-65864-25898324/ info@all-energy.co.uk (www.smartenergy.co.uk) Fri, 26 Feb 2010 08:45:14 GMT http://www.acadvertiser.co.uk/lanarkshire-news/local-news/monklands-news/2010/02/24/approval-recommended-for-controversial-carnbroe-pyrolysis-plant-65864-25898324/
