BEAMA aims to demonstrate a range of products from different manufacturers in the burgeoning area of Smart Metering. The BEAMA stand will have a backdrop outlining the wide range of products that their members produce that impact on the generation, distribution and end use of electricity. The main focus for this exhibition will be Smart Metering and this will be centred around demonstration equipment on the stand. An example of a demonstration board with a working Smart Meter and visual display unit is illustrated.

The Government commitment to the roll-out of Smart Metering to all homes by 2020 is expected to have a significant impact on consumers’ understanding and use of energy. The challenge of installing smart meters in 26 million households is immense but if we get it right the opportunities for delivering UK carbon savings are massive. The one-to-one engagement between consumers and energy suppliers on individuals’ energy use will be the catalyst for delivering a wide range of government policy ideals that have long been desired but not yet achieved i.e. Energy Services, Behaviour change, Targeted EE measures, Individuals taking ownership, ‘Feed in’ & multi rate tariffs - all of which will ultimately lead to culture change in the way consumers understand and amend their use of energy. Already we are seeing the installation of ‘smart’ technologies within homes and smart meters will soon follow to become the communication hub which will facilitate coordinated energy management between the demand side and the supply side. The final piece of the jigsaw will be the development of smart networks.

The BEAMA stand will feature household level Smart Metering and associated products and of interest to Energy Suppliers/Policy makers/Regulators/ Developers/Architects/Designers/End Users.

The British Electrotechnical and Allied Manufacturers Association (BEAMA) is the UK trade body for the electrical and allied industries. It has 150 members including several international brands, and many SMEs. It is a proactive organisation involved in many commercial and technical issues liaising with many stakeholders including the UK Government and the European Commission.

In the field of Smart Metering BEAMA is the leading UK trade body coordinating industry engagement across Smart Metering, Smart Housing and Smart Grids. BEAMA staff are also actively engaged in the European Smart Metering Alliance and currently chair the European Smart Metering Industry Group. www.beama.org.uk

DAIKIN AIR CONDITIONING UK LTD - Daikin has more than 50 years' experience in the production of air source heat pump systems, manufacturing over a million units a year for residential & commercial applications. Their product innovations provide high energy efficiency solutions that minimize the impact on the environment and running costs.

Daikin Altherma represents the culmination of Daikin’s decades-long experience with heat pump technology. It is a total domestic heating and hot water system based on air source heat pump technology, and represents a flexible and cost-effective alternative to a fossil fuel boiler.

The inherent energy efficiency characteristics of Daikin Altherma make it an ideal solution to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Daikin Europe has recently launched its unique high temperature heat pump system, Daikin Altherma HT that needs no additional backup heating to provide water flow temperatures of up to 80°C.

Their systems offer renewable energy heating and hot water solutions for the whole domestic housing market place.

There is an increasing demand from consumers for renewable energy solutions like heat pumps, systems that are highly efficient with an average 50% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuel boilers.

The cost of energy to run a heat pump heating and hot water system can be up to 50% less than the energy for a traditional fossil fuel fired boiler system.

There are 26 million domestic homes in the UK and they contribute to around 27% of the total UK carbon emissions. Of this the heating and hot water systems produce 70% of the total carbon emissions from domestic homes. Although much is done to reduce heat losses using better insulation the continued use of traditional fossil fuel boiler in domestic homes will still mean that carbon emissions are unacceptably high if we are reach the necessary reduction in emissions for the future.

Heat pumps are now a recognized renewable energy technology where the sustainable heat in the air around us can be used to provide heating and hot water for domestic houses and apartments. For every 1kW of electrical energy input the heat pump can delivery from 3 to 5 kW for heating and hot water making them extremely efficient compared to traditional heating and hot water boiler systems.

One of the issues with heat pump systems is that they can only produce hot water flow temperatures up to 500C. In the modern well insulated property this is perfectly adequate for both hot water and heating. However when considering the replacement of a traditional boiler system (gas oil , or solid fuel) in older properties (the majority of the UK’s housing stock is over 30 years old) with a heat pump solution the heating and plumbing installer often has to redesign the total heating system. The reason for this is that the heat pumps will only provide hot water flow temperatures up to 500C and this is not adequate to provide consistent space heating (especially in the depth of winter) without a major redesign and replacement of the old heat emitters (radiators, fan convectors etc.).

Therefore in many cases a straight replacement of the old fossil fuel boiler with a heat pump is not possible without the inclusion of a new heat emitter system that can make the use of heat pumps unaffordable.

Hence, the use of heat pumps without back up heating (usually gas or electric) in older properties is limited by the overall cost of the installation compared to the straight replacement of the older boiler with a similar traditional heating and hot water boiler.

With the possibility of reaching up to 80degC, the Daikin Altherma product range now covers the whole spectrum of required flow temperatures in the market that can suit specific requirements of any heat emitter. The Daikin Altherma high temperature (HT) opens up the renewable market for boiler replacement, which will contribute to the challenging UK emission targets of the existing housing stock.

There are flexible installation possibilities to suite all types of houses and apartments. The system avoids the need to replace the old heat emitter radiators system reducing the overall cost of refurbishment.

It offers good prospects for wider application:

  • Best heating and hot water solution in off gas grid homes.
  • Easy to install, no groundwork i.e. trenches or boreholes.
  • No gas supply, flues or ventilation required.
  • No fuel storage tanks required.
  • Comparable installation costs to gas fired boilers
  • Reduce carbon emissions by up to 50%.
  • Using Daikin Altherma HT means that energy costs can be reduced by up to 50% compared to traditional fossil fuel boiler systems, contributing to tackle Fuel poverty.

Other exhibits will include the Daikin Solar System that features the latest solar thermal technology to harness renewable, free energy from the sun. At the peak, up to 80% of the utilisable solar energy can be transformed into usable heat. The system uses solar radiation from the sun to produce solar heated water which can be utilised for domestic hot water and heating support. The Daikin Solar system forms a perfect combination with Daikin Altherma air source heat pump, providing efficient support for hot water production and home heating with a very low environmental impact.
